(WDAY TV) - Women's handbags are helping educate children and encourage them to read. At the United Way of Cass-Clay's ninth annual Women's Luncheon, 90 purses were on display to bid on and raise money for Success by 6, a program enhancing child care in the F-M area and giving books to children under five years old.

The keynote speaker, Young and the Restless star Victoria Rowell, says rural communities can often make a bigger impact than big areas.

"Very rooted in our opinion as farmers, at the same time, there has to be a collaborative spirit if you're going to be a successful farmer. So Mr. Heath bailed our hay, we traded off cream for eggs with the Amadons. I mean, there's a collaborative spirit in the farming community."

About 450 women went to the event.
