West Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Being physically or sexually assaulted is something many women think can never happen to them, but statistics show it can and does happen, nearly every minute of every day. Here at home, West Fargo Police are helping women fight back, hosting a free self defense workshop tonight.

Every person has a basic instinct to protect themselves when they get in a violent situation, but police say it's not about how much muscle you have, it's how you present yourself that can save your life.

Aida Jupich has never felt like she was in danger, living in her south Fargo neighborhood. She's no expert when it comes to defending herself against attackers, which is why she decided to come and learn all she can at tonight's class.

“No moves, nothing, I just have some pepper spray and that's all I have.”

“That’s not to say that it couldn't happen here. A small community, we are tight, but you never know, bad things happen all over, so you should just be prepared.”

Tonight police are teaching basic techniques, hitting attackers in the mid section, with the palm of the hand, some kicks and escapes. But they say staying safe is more about brains, than brawn.

“You need the proper attitude, even if you may not have the skill level that could defend yourself. If you have the proper attitude and display the confidence, sometimes that makes the situation go better in your favor.”

While confidence is key, police say women should use common sense, and stay out of unlit parking lots, don't walk alone or while talking on their cell phone. Most importantly, police say if you're attacked, don't back down.

“Don’t allow the person to take you or do what they want to do, always fight back and don't ever give up.”

Some other tips from police are to yell out if you're in trouble, but they say not to yell help, yell fire, or call 911. They say that will get people's attention and will make them more apt to help.
