Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY TV) - The cold and snow are moving in, making a busy year for homeless shelters even busier. 24 hour facilities like churches united say they are prepared for a big crowd, but they're also, already full.
Churches United homeless shelter has turned away 51 men, 33 women and 53 families just in the last two weeks, and as it gets colder, the director says those numbers are only going to get bigger.
Extra mattresses are on standby in case the weather gets really bad, if that's the case; Churches United can overlook its 65 bed maximum, and set up temporary sleeping areas in community rooms. Shelters are also trying to stock up on winter clothing. They have a great need for donated coats, boots, sweatshirts, even socks.
With all the people in shelters, Thompson also worries about the spread of the flu. They are prepared to quarantine off parts of rooms as well as provide an extra eating area.
