Chancellor: NDSU pres resignation is right thing

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The chancellor of North Dakota's university system says North Dakota State University President Joe Chapman is doing the right thing by resigning.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The chancellor of North Dakota's university system says North Dakota State University President Joe Chapman is doing the right thing by resigning.

William Goetz says he spoke with Chapman and agrees with his decision to quit.

Chapman submitted his resignation Wednesday. He intends to leave his job Jan. 2.

His action comes in the wake of disclosures about cost overruns for a new house for the NDSU president and Chapman's use of an open-ended expense fund provided by the NDSU Foundation.

Goetz says "some discretion was lacking" in the spending. He says some NDSU donors will think their money was being wasted.

Goetz says Chapman did a good job at NDSU and raised the bar for university programs and research.
