Fergus Falls, Minn. (WDAY TV) - A plan to expand the landfill in Fergus Falls is raising a stink with some of those neighbors who live close by. The city has run out of room and so there are plans to create a new debris demolition site just off the interstate. The county and pollution control must okay the plan and while this does not involve raw garbage, some are concerned about first impressions.
After years of hauling construction waste to this site on the outskirts of Fergus Falls, the city wants to move its operation a few hundred yards away, close to I-94 and some homeowners.
Today, some of those who live close to the landfill told county commissioners the demolition landfill will create problems for them, from air quality to pocket book issues.
“Got concerns about dust that is the biggest thing and who would want to ever buy our property with that there. “
To alleviate concerns some people have over a possible eye sore on this project trees have been planted on either side of this project including near the interstate and it could be greener than it is now.
“Once it is all done it is re landscaped and grassed so it will be an open space in the future.”
Most agree no one wants a dump in their back yard. With no raw garbage and so many things being recycled, some hope the life and purpose of a landfill changes for the next generation.
The Otter Tail County Board of Commissioners took no action on the permit. A November vote is expected after pollution control weighs in on the matter.
