Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It's a big day at the Red River Zoo today, the beginning of some major changes ahead. Today the golden shovels were at the ready for a groundbreaking for the zoo's new entrance building.

The zoo will have a new layout with the entrance on the south side of the zoo made necessary by the expansion of I-94. The project was made possible by local businessman and philanthropist Shelly Ellig.

He donated 400-thousand dollars for the project. The rest will be raised through members of the zoo.

“It is such an exciting feeling. When we started we were really concerned about how we were going to be able to manage all of this, all the funding, all the construction in that short amount of period.”

The Shelly Ellig entrance building will open next spring and feature a new South American animal exhibit.
