BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Democratic activists have appointed Terryl Jacobs to succeed former state Sen. Aaron Krauter, who resigned last month to accept a federal appointment.

The 51-year-old Jacobs, of Regent, will serve the remainder of Krauter's term, which ends in December 2010. She said Friday she will decide next spring whether to run for her own four-year term.

State law allows local activists from the incumbent's political party to name a replacement for a legislator who resigns or dies in office.

Jacobs works as a crop insurance adjuster. She is a director of Slope Electric Cooperative Inc., which supplies electricity to four counties in North Dakota's southwestern corner, and served on the Mott-Regent school board from 2003 to 2006.

Jacobs' legislative district includes Grant and Sioux counties and parts of Morton and Hettinger counties. Its House members are Democrats Jim Kerzman, of Mott, and Rod Froelich, of Selfridge.

Krauter, who served in the Senate for 18 years, stepped down after he was appointed as the North Dakota director of the federal Farm Service Agency.
