Valley City, ND (WDAY TV) - Declining enrollment in the Valley City school district is forcing school leaders to take a closer look at athletics and the arts, possibly cutting down on the number of sports teams or drama clubs. WDAY 6 Reporter Stephanie Goetz tells us how a committee of students, faculty, and parents will be coming up with ideas of where to trim.

The roar of the Friday Night crowd in Valley City Has softened over the years.

"20 years ago, we had 650 students, you know, now have 350 and in 4 years we're going to have 300!"

With fewer students in the huddle and on the horn, activities like this are now under scrutiny.

"To me, it's taking a more serious step."

This year, the Valley City schools moved from Class A to Class B athletics because of fewer students. Now, the school is putting together a committee of students, parents, administrators and faculty to figure out where they can cut.

Every activity is going to be looked at. everything from the battles on the turf and court to those marching on it.

"Will it mean we have 3 or 4 teams versus 4 or 5?"

"We want to offer a number of activities for our students but yet we want them to be successful."

The group that will be formed in the next few weeks will meet over the next year. School officials say they want to face the issue now, while they have time to get public input. Rather than making a rushed move down the road.

School officials hope to have their first meeting by the end of November.
