Dynamite find shakes up Kenmare for several hours

KENMARE, N.D. (AP) — Officials say homes and businesses in the town of Kenmare were evacuated for several hours after nine sticks of dynamite were found in an abandoned building by a worker who then brought them to City Hall.

Kenmare firefighter Chuck Leet said officials had to evacuate four blocks of the residential area and the entire downtown square in the town of about 1,000 people Thursday. No one was hurt.

Leet said Minot's bomb squad detonated the explosives west of town.

A search of the old Kenmare Clothing store, where the dynamite was found, turned up no more of it and an all-clear was sounded after about four hours.

Mike Bennett, one of those evacuated, said he cannot remember anything like it. He said, "It's really strange for Kenmare."

Leet said the explosives could have been there for years.
