Mooreton, ND (WDAY TV) - In a small North Dakota town, an annual Labor Day celebration holds a little more meaning this year. It's the town's 125th anniversary and people have come from all over to be a part of it. WDAY 6 Reporter Christina Vaughn has our story.
On Labor Day weekend in this part of southeastern North Dakota, Mooreton is the place to be. Even though Mike and Sherry Kern don't live in Mooreton, this festival is a family tradition and they say there's a simple reason why.
“I think the small community ties, if they know the great bend fire trucks are going to be here, they'll come from great bend to watch. Just that kind of thing, you know small community ties.”
Others who live a little closer to Mooreton say they wouldn't miss this annual celebration. Especially this year, they say today's large crowd is a testament to the town and why it's still going strong even after 125 years.
“People here in Mooreton work very hard to support their community and to get together and work together and I think that's what's made it such a success.”
Catching up with friends, neighbors, and acquaintances from town, whether it's at the barbeque lunch, the parade, or just walking around in the street.
“It’s a good time to support you know, really nice part about living in a rural area and small communities.”
“One of those things where they work together day to day, and they kind of celebrate community day to day.”
And it's the special bond they share and celebrate and hope will continue for another 125 years to come. Organizers of the annual celebration say there is talk of ending the festival after this year, but they say no final decision has been made yet.
