Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - Graduation requirements will soon be changing for students in Fargo. Starting in 2012, students will have to have an extra credit in both math and science in order to get their diploma. WDAY 6 Reporter Christina Vaughn joins us tonight with more on why there's a need for the change.

This change is getting Fargo Schools in line with the newest legislation from the state. The hope is for students to have a more rigorous academic experience and expand on skills they'll need for the next step in their lives.

Fargo's Assistant Superintendents says students here need to get on the same page as others around the country and the world. He says these days, available jobs are geared more toward math and science and students need to have the ability to compete for those jobs.

With the addition to the curriculum, students will have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and be just as competitive as others their age.

“Certainly I think as we look around our world, our country and even our state, math and science are skills that our students are going to need from now and into the future, and this will help our students be prepared for that next step.”

Grosz says since the changes won't go into affect until 2012. It will give students plenty of time to meet with school counselors and arrange their schedules to fit the requirements.
