Quarterbacks compete for the starting spot

Fargo, ND (WDAY Sports) - When NDSU brought in junior college transfer Dante Perez to compete with Nick Mertens for the starting quarterback job, it presented Craig Bohl with options. Add in the fact that Jose Mohler is eligible in game three and things are certainly different for the Bison in 2009, but is it a good thing? WDAY 6's Trevor Peterson has more.

“We’ve got a battle going at the quarterback position.”

That phrase wasn't spoken last year in Bisonville. Nick Mertens started every game and threw 16 touchdowns, but it's the 15 interceptions and numerous fumbles that stand out.

“We need more consistency from Nick, take care of the football. We turned the ball over way too much last year. The quarterback has the ball in his hands a whole lot.”

One of the reasons Mertens struggled, according to Craig Bohl, was the limited playbook. No legitimate backup quarterback meant the team had to keep Mertens healthy, which resulted in safer play calls, less roll outs and run-pass options.

“Now we have more depth at the quarterback spot. So you can expose the QB to more contact. I can tell you our quarterback will be exposed to getting hit more than before.”

Mertens embraces the expanded playbook, and the idea of more competition at his spot.

“It’s good to have them back there pushing me. I want to start. I'll go out and do the best I can.”

Bohl made it clear on media day that Mertens is not guaranteed the starting spot. Transfer Dante Perez was 18-4 in 2 years as a starter in junior college, and is getting a crash course in the bison offense.

“It’s an all day process for me. I have to learn this in a month. I'm out there competing for a job. That's why I’m here, to compete for a starting job.’

No matter who wins the starting battle, the bottom line is winning games.

“That’s the mindset you have to have. Find a way to win, no matter what the situation.”

The Bison continue fall practice tomorrow morning.
