Erhard, Minn. (WDAY TV) - A rural Erhard home is destroyed after an afternoon fire. Ottertail Sheriff's Deputy Jon Karger noticed black smoke coming from 270th Avenue east near Erhard.

He found the house engulfed in flames. The homeowner was in the Fargo area when the fire started. After two hours, fire fighters put out the blaze. The house was a total loss. Karger says they know where but not how the fire started.

"The cause is undetermined; he claims the stoves and stuff were left off. The washing machine was on at the time. We don't know if it started from there or not, but we do know the general area where it had started and that was in the kitchen."

Four dogs and two cats died in the blaze.
