Moorhead, Minn. (WDAY Sports) - One of the best wrestling programs in the region is looking for a new head coach. MSUM Athletic Director Doug Peters tells us tonight that Head Coach Keenan Spiess has resigned his post.
Peters says that Spiess was not fired and that he chose to leave the college wrestling scene to pursue other interests outside of the sport.
Spiess was hired back in 2003 and turned the Dragons into a perennial contender in Division 2, including a 12 win campaign in 2008 with this year's team ranked as high as 15th in Division 2, but says it's time to move on.
“Something I've been thinking about for close to a year probably, I am proud of what we did there and MSUM with the resources that we had, I really think we worked our tails off to keep the tradition going and have a program that we're proud of in the community and bring us some national success.”
Spiess added that his resignation had nothing to do with MSUM's reprimand from the NCAA after a Dragon wrestler was arrested at the Division 2 national meet back in march. Peters added that a coaching list is being worked on.
