FARGO, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota spring wheat production this year is expected to be down slightly from 2008, while the durum wheat crop is forecast to be stable.

Spring wheat — North Dakota's principle crop — is used for such foods as bread. Durum wheat is the main ingredient in pasta.

The Agriculture Department's production report on Friday pegs the North Dakota spring wheat crop at 230 million bushels, down 6 percent, and the durum crop at 42.4 million bushels, up 130,000 bushels, less than 1 percent. Spring wheat yields are expected to be down and durum wheat yields up.

The report projects North Dakota winter wheat production at 23 million bushels, up 2 percent; barley production at 62.2 million bushels, down 28 percent; and oat production at 8.25 million bushels, up 24 percent.
