Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The NDSU football team has added some much needed depth at the quarterback spot. San Jose native Dante Perez told me tonight that he has verbally committed to NDSU.

Perez is 5-11, 200 pounds and was offered by San Jose State and Oregon State out of high school. He committed to San Jose, but coaches moved him to receiver so he went to foothill to revive his quarterback career.

He completed 57 percent of his passes in both seasons, combining for more than 43-hundred yards and 48 touchdowns. He says he's learned a lot about being a leader on the field from his dad and his coaches.

“You know they kind of developed me into the leader I am today, so I believe that being a leader is more than on the field but off the field, making good choices. What you do affects your team and your teammates and coaches and everybody else.

Perez says Craig Bohl told him he wants to see him challenge Nick Mertens for the starting job. He will have two years of eligibility.
