Power coming back on in Austin after storms hit

AUSTIN, Minn. (AP) — Crews are restoring power to Austin after at least two apparent tornadoes struck the southeastern Minnesota town, knocking down trees and power lines.

No serious injuries are reported. Mower (MOH'-ur) County Sheriff Terese Amazi (AM'-uh-zye) says a man was treated and released for a minor hand injury.

Austin Police Chief Paul Philipp says a squad car and another vehicle collided Wednesday night when stoplights were out. Both vehicles had substantial damage, but no one was hurt.

As of Thursday morning, power is back on for up to 80 percent of Austin. General manager Jerry McCarthy says Austin Utilities hopes to restore power to the rest of the city by the end of Thursday.

A National Weather Service meteorologist is in Austin, trying to confirm that it was a tornado.
