Waubun, Minn. (WDAY TV) - They might have to put on some long under-wear, but tomorrow morning families will gather across Minnesota for a day of free fishing and for the 12th year, volunteers will gather on White Earth Lake near Waubun to show children the art and beauty of fishing.

It is all part of Take a Kid Fishing day and as WDAY 6 reporter Kevin Wallevand tells us, it is all about quality time with a fishing line.

On crisp day made for die hard anglers lay waiting for a warm-up, a June that refuses to meet expectations. Inside the Cedar Crest Resort Lodge on White Earth Lake, volunteers are putting together prizes and goodie bags for young anglers expected for the take a kid fishing day tomorrow.

“Some of them it is the only time of they year they go to the lake and go fishing. “

Trophies are given for nearly everything pulled from the lake, a way to get kids interested in a pastime treasured in this neck of the woods.

“Fishing is for life, you get hooked on fishing it is a great pastime, opposed to other things they can do.”

And at a time when there are likely more kids sitting at home tonight on the computer than in the fishing boat, this free day of fishing seems like an appealing smart thing to do.

“It gives you an opportunity to get away from the TV, computer and Nintendo and sit and talk with your family in the boat.”

Long time angler and former wday outdoors show host mike miller is still involved in the event he helped start, even a stroke 4-years ago cannot keep him away from take a kid fishing.

“There is a place in his heart he wants to pass on this fishing to another generation.”

Close to 200-kids are expected to wet the line Saturday. No expectations, just a chance to get a bite, reel one in, and take part in this great celebration of summer.

The event starts at ten tomorrow morning at Cedar Crest Resort on White Earth Lake.
