A fond farewell to a beloved school house

Dent, Minn. (WDAY TV) - There has been a school in Dent, Minnesota since the early 1900's, but today the last group of elementary students said a fond farewell to a much loved little school house. With declining enrollments and a budget pinch, Perham-Dent decided to shutdown the elementary building. Not before a great good bye; the story from WDAY 6 Reporter Kevin Wallevand.

Dent, Minn. (WDAY TV) - There has been a school in Dent, Minnesota since the early 1900's, but today the last group of elementary students said a fond farewell to a much loved little school house.

With declining enrollments and a budget pinch, Perham-Dent decided to shutdown the elementary building. Not before a great good bye; the story from WDAY 6 Reporter Kevin Wallevand.

They even got seconds of chicken nuggets today, 38-students preparing to shut the door on old school full of friends and childhood dreams.

“This has been the best part of my life.”

Nellie Kratzke has been a nurse, cook, playground monitor and grandma for 20 years at the school.

“I love my job.”

A Para who has worked along side children every school day.

“I like kids and kids are my world.”

Today, students who came here years ago returned to say good bye too, leaving messages and memories on posters.

“I like that everyone knew everyone and the teachers are great.”

Since the 60's, this country school, its teachers have watched kids grow up and out, but old age, the times have caught up with dent elementary and so today, a deserving and fitting farewell.

A group hug for an old friend, bricks, mortar, and all.

“I have had some nice teachers throughout the years and it has been a fun inspiration for me I learned a lot here.”

But before vacation and the summer sun one last game, a little piece of Otter Tail County settled back and retired.

“There is an empty spot in your heart, gets to be an empty spot.”

The students and staff of dent elementary will go to Heart of the Lakes School in Perham next year. The city of Dent, along with Head Start is expected to move into the old school.
