Hendrum, Minn. (WDAY TV) - It is hard to imagine just weeks ago volunteers were piling and stacking sandbags all over the valley. Taking them all down, that's another matter, but a group of students from California Lutheran University has decided to kick off summer vacation by helping out here in the valley.

WDAY 6 Reporter Kevin Wallevand tells us why some of the volunteers know what flood trauma is all about.

Not far from Hendrum Minnesota today, John Aas watched as volunteers from California Lutheran helped him take down the hundreds of sandbags that ring his home.

California Lutheran campus Pastors Scott and Melissa Maxwell Doherty along with their son Nate made the trip from the west coast here. They know about floods.

“Proud recipients of 8 feet of water in our basement in 97.”

The family lived in grand forks during the 97 flood.

“We are well aware of what it is like to evacuate, pull out and then wonder are we going to be able to get back in.”

Son Nate, now a college sophomore, was 8 at the time.

“I just remember the real scary stuff because I was so young. And that is what stays with me the most.”

And so when the family watched our flooding from California a month ago, they knew it was important to bring students and community service for the clean up.

“It is just back breaking work that nobody knows and sees and still needs to get done.”

The sandbag wall quickly came down here on the Aas farm, miles from the California coast line; a chance for these students to play a part in our flood recovery.

“Because of 97 it was the volunteers who were like angels.”

“The emotional reality is that it never goes away.”

This is the 4th college team from California to help in the flood relief effort. All part of Lutheran Disaster Response.
