Fargo, ND (WDAY Sports) - Craig Bohl will be the first to tell you that he didn't play three years for the Nebraska Cornhuskers because he was the most talented defensive back on the team. He credits pride, responsibility, and commitment to the team, three things that have been sorely lacking for a handful of his players.

Three suspensions and two dismissals have left the team shorthanded and inexperienced. So today, one day after his team wrapped up spring drills I asked him, given his past, how frustrating it was to see talented players throwing away opportunities.

“I think anytime we have players that step out of our guidelines it rankles us because as I mentioned character is the bedrock of our program. I think anyone across the state that knows us and knows our coaches gonna say that and young people do make mistakes there is an opportunity to redeem themselves, but if some young men choose not to change their pattern are going to be removed from bison football. Those are probably the hardest things you go through as a coach, but when you're dealing with young people, you look at a whole body of work and make decisions that are prudent and move forward.”

As a head coach what kinds of things can you do to foster a climate of being responsible to each other within the team?

“Well, every head coach in college football is confronted with this, as we see a change with young people in our area, these guys need to recognize that how they live their lives and their pattern of behavior is important because it reflects on our football team. We're going through a whole education process at NDSU to make sure we're on the forefront, alcohol is a pervasive drug across campus and other campuses and other drugs, we're certainly not the lone ranger but we're going to be very aggressive in addressing it.”

Bohl says he has not decided how many games the players who are indefinitely suspended will miss.
