(WDAZ-TV) - A car collided with Amtrak's Empire Builder at a crossing west of Larimore early Thursday morning, sending the driver to the hospital.

The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. No train passengers or crew members were hurt, but 22-year-old Justin Larsen of Niagra, ND, was injured.

Highway Patrol Sargeant Dolph Oldenburg says it is unknown whether trees near the crossing obstructed Larsen's view of the train.

When the car hit the train, it uncoupled cars from the rest of the train.

Larsen was taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks where he was treated and released. The Highway Patrol lists charges against Larsen as pending. His 2008 Chevy Cobalt was totaled. Larsen was wearing a seat belt.
