GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - North Dakota has been voted one of the top places to live in the country. For the third year in a row, Hawaii was voted the happiest state in the U.S., but we aren't far behind.

North Dakota is only .2 percent behind Hawaii in the poll. The third happiest state is our neighbor, Minnesota.

Despite the recent movie clip saying North Dakota is the worst place on earth, it has actually been voted the second happiest state in the country.

"People come together when things go wrong. That's the nice thing about living in a community like that," Shawn Willette said.

Workers in our state report the best work environments in the country.

"It's absolutely great. You can get a job anywhere here," Willette said.

"Our state is one of the most happy places around because we have the lowest unemployment in the country, we are one of the few if not the only states where the state has a budget surplus. So in addition to all of the usual reasons like family friendly and a good place to raise kids, we have economic prosperity," economics professor Patrick O'Neill said.

"The values everyone has are really good. It's important to be nice here because you all know each other, it's so small," Kelsi Glynn said.

"The people are really friendly. Everyone gets along and helps out. The weather sucks," Willette said.

But for some, that's the best part of the state.

"Honestly it's the winters. I love them. I love the cold and the snow and it's like the perfect Christmas all winter long," Bethany Abeln said.

"It keeps the trouble out of our state. The weather keeps everything away where people don't want to come here because it's too cold and unpredictable," Mark Ouellette said.

Other top states are Utah, Alaska and Colorado. The least happy states are Nevada, Tennessee and Florida.

The data was gathered from a telephone survey of over 350,000 adults living in all 50 states.
