GRAND FORKS (WDAZ-TV) - A woman who caused a three-vehicle crash in north Grand Forks last month has been charged with manslaughter after an Inkster, ND, woman died of severe injuries.

Ebony Nichole Miles, 26, of Grand Forks, was arrested today on the charge, which is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 10 years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both.

Miles ran a stop sign at the intersection of the frontage road south of the Budget Inn Express and Gateway Drive at about 5:07 p.m. on February 8. She struck a vehicle driven by Raymond Umphrey, 64, of Inkster. His vehicle spun around and was hit on the driver's side by another vehicle.

Raymond's wife, Florence, was in the passenger seat and had severe injuries from the collision. The couple was taken to Altru Hospital and Raymond was released that night. According to an affidavit of probable cause filed on March 9, Florence suffered a fractured second cervical vertebrae and had a closed head injury that caused bleeding around her brain. She died at Altru on February 16.

An autopsy was performed and found Umphrey died from the injuries she sustained in the crash.

After the crash, Miles drove her damaged vehicle into the Budget Inn Express parking lot and, according to a manager, had to climb out of the passenger side of the car.

Police searched around the hotel and arrested Miles about a half hour later.

Miles made her initial appearance in court on the manslaughter charge at 3 p.m. today. She'll be back in court April 25.
