GRAND FORKS - WDAZ and Whalen's Moving and Storage dropped off more than 1,000 gifts to Toys for Tots on Tuesday, all thanks to our viewers and the community who donated over the past week.

This was the largest donation Toys For Tots received this year. The program's needs doubled from last year.

Toys for Tots is expecting to serve about 800 children and nearly 400 families.

And because of the community's support, United Way expects to have enough toys to serve those on its waiting list.

"Businesses in town who kind of stepped up and said 'hey we want to run a promotion, you know how can we help?' And so we've been able to collect hundreds, if not a thousand or so more toys than we originally would have had," United Way marketing and campaign coordinator Lisa Martinez said.

Distribution of the toys started Monday and will run through Wednesday.

Kids and parents will stop by the store at Columbia Mall to pick out Christmas presents.
