Fellow Union Members Give Holiday Help to Those Locked-out

EAST GRAND FORKS, MN (WDAZ-TV) - Union workers across the region are helping locked-out American Crystal Sugar workers have a normal holiday season with a food drive.

EAST GRAND FORKS, MN (WDAZ-TV) - Union workers across the region are helping locked-out American Crystal Sugar workers have a normal holiday season with a food drive.

With each can, box and bag, more items are ready for those locked-out workers in need.

"There's everything from food to toiletries to health and beauty aides, there's everything. All the way to turkeys, you name it, it's in there," Teamsters local 120 member Donny Walz said.

Locked-out workers have partnered with the local teamsters to plan this drive for nearly one month. On Tuesday, a Teamsters local semi from the Twin Cities came to town delivering nearly 30,000 pounds of food to workers up and down the Red River Valley.

"It started out as a small project and ended up being a lot bigger with all the support and everything. We figured we'd do a really good one for the holidays," locked-out worker Debra Kostrzewski said.

Out of the nearly 1,300 locked-out American Crystal Sugar workers, around 400 cannot collect unemployment.

Donations have been pouring in.

"It feels really good in the community you know that people still care about us and are willing to help out," locked-out worker David Wasylow said.

Volunteers say helping out fellow workers who may not be able to collect unemployment during this time, feels good.

And they are ready to help out again if the lockout lasts through Christmas.

"We're all in this fight together whether they're teamsters or BCTGM, we're all in it together. What one faces we're all going to face it sooner or later and we have to help each other," Walz said.
