DENVER (WDAZ-TV) - The Grand Forks teenager injured in a motorcycle crash has been transferred to a hospital in Denver for rehabilitation.
18-year-old Ben Johnson suffered a severed spinal column in the accident on Wednesday, October 19.
According to a CaringBridge site, Johnson and his family arrived at Craig Hospital on Thursday.
He was earlier transferred to a Minneapolis hospital from Grand Forks.
Johnson will undergo tests on Friday to help the medical team learn more about his condition.
His transfer had been delayed after doctors found a small pocket of air outside his lungs, but a CT scan showed that it vanished, clearing him for travel.
Johnson is the son of Grand Forks Freedom Church pastor Nathan Johnson.
Police say Ben was driving his 2005 Suzuki RT south on Evergreen Drive when he went up over the curb, hit a mailbox and was thrown from the vehicle.
The head neurosurgeon at HCMC, who performed an earlier surgery, said that Johnson's spinal cord injury was about 1/4 inch from his aorta. The doctor said that most times when the spinal cord takes such a severe blow, the aorta is ruptured, resulting in immediate death.
