NELSON COUNTY, ND (WDAZ-TV) - The North Dakota Highway Patrol conducted a sobriety checkpoint last Saturday, October 22, about two miles north of Lakota, ND, along State Highway 1.

The checkpoint took place from about 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. and was dedicated in the memory of Monte Zak, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2004.

37 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and one driver had been consuming alcohol, but no DUI arrests were made.

During the alcohol enforcement saturation immediately following the checkpoint, NDHP officers arrested three DUI drivers. The goal was to provide high visibility enforcement and remove alcohol and drug impaired drivers from the roadway.

There have been 20 traffic fatalities in the northeast region of North Dakota; 8 have been alcohol-related.
