CAVALIER, ND (WDAZ-TV) - The man convicted of killing 19-year-old B.J. Kalis of Walhalla will spend the rest of his life in prison, without the chance for parole.
Miguel Medina-Romero was also sentenced Tuesday to ten years on a count of unlawful possession/manufacture of a controlled substance and 20 years for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. He'll serve those terms concurrently.
An earlier charge of tampering with physical evidence was dismissed.
In October, Medina-Romero was found guilty by a jury in Pembina County court.
He pleaded not guilty to all counts in January.
Medina-Romero shot Kalis about a dozen times with an assault rifle outside a home in Pembina in October 2010, killing him instantly. After the shooting, Medina-Romero called 911 claiming he shot an intruder in self-defense.
Medina-Romero was represented by attorneys Robert and Neil Fleming.
The case was prosecuted by Cameron Sillers and Stuart John Askew.
