Devils Lake Commission Reverses Stance on East-end Outlet

DEVILS LAKE, ND (WDAZ-TV) - The Devils Lake City Commission has changed its position on a planned east-end outlet on Devils Lake.

The change happened at a special commission meeting Monday.

After voting no on one resolution and rescinding motions on two others, the Commission finally passed a short resolution saying "the city of Devils Lake supports all efforts to move water off Devils Lake and reduce the level of the lake as soon as possible."

That action was met with some opposition.

City commissioner Craig Stromme says he doesn't see a point in spending nearly $90 million for something that will only allow a combined 1,000 cubic feet per second of water out of the lake. And he wasn't the only one.

Some of those attending the meeting asked why there was no elevation set for the gravity fed outlet. Some feel the resolution is pointless without it.

There are also concerns with protecting downstream interests.

Some wonder if that's the goal of each project being constructed in the Devils Lake basin.

No matter what the case, people in the basin are well aware and say they have been for 18 years.
