GRAND FORKS, ND - UND fans will have a chance to pick up some apparel at discounted prices. A July 3rd fire at the Ralph Engelstad Arena caused widespread smoke and soot damage throughout the building, including the Sioux Shop.
"From jerseys to bobble head dolls to outdoor grill kits, everything that was in the Sioux Shop during the fire will be on sale Thursday and Friday," Ralph Engelstad Arena Director of Events Chris Semrau said.
The sale starts at noon both days and ends at 8:00 both nights. Though all sales will be final, items are expected to go fast.
"Jerseys will be a hot seller. Again, they were very lightly damaged with the smoke smell, a little bit of soot that hopefully folks can wash and get out of the jersey. So we think those will sell very, very quickly," Semrau said.
Some UND fans are looking at this as a final way to pick up some cheap Fighting Sioux gear before the name changes.
"Could always use more stuff, and just starting out so you need all your Sioux stuff you can get since it'll be gone soon," UND Freshman Kurt Judge said.
But some students are finding that school-related expenses won't allow them to shop for much of anything even if it is 40 percent off.
"With moving expenses and everything, I mean, I think just not having money is a huge factor not being able to spend on clothes and stuff," UND Doctoral Student Kyle Hill said.
But Kyle Hill does understand why some fans want to pick up as much merchandise as they can.
"Maybe 20 or 30 years down the road when you get to have your kids grow up and come to UND, or something like that, and just to have that nostalgia," Hill added.
Sales have been strong at the Sioux Shop since the announcement that the University will retire the nickname and logo this season.
