The victim reported to the Consumer Protection Division that the caller claimed there was a problem with his 2005 tax return.

If he didn't settle the debt within the next hour he would be arrested.

The scam artist told the victim to purchase 18 Green Dot cards and then read the numbers off of each card.

The caller then emptied the cards while on the phone with the victim.

North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said to hang up on scam artists immediately and to be vigilant about calls from strangers on the phone
