Volunteers packed and are distributing more than 5,100 backpacks to kids in kindergarten through high school.

This year, United Way expects to serve more than 3,000 families.

Thomas Hill\United Way of Cass-Clay: “As the community grows, the need is growing as well. So we want to be able to meet that, while we also look at proactive solutions to try to really make sure that families are ready for school on that first day.”

There will also be a second distribution event on Tuesday from 4 to 7 at the FargoDome.
