UND has first scrimmage of 2014 season
Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) - The UND football team has a week of practice in the books, and today the rebuilding phase took another step with the team's first scrimmage of fall camp.
A lot of new faces hoping to make a big impression, on head coach Bubba Schweigert and the rest of the new coaching staff.
The defense was in control early, during the Red Zone period, Cole Reyes lights up Tyler Coyne, that's the physical style that the new regime wants to bring.
The offense finds their rhythm, Joe Mollberg, the Detroit Lakes product, locked in a QB battle for the 2nd straight year, finds Kyle Ruhe in the back of the end zone who makes a great catch for the touchdown.
New offensive coordinator Paul Rudolph has put more of an emphasis on the run game this season, so he's got to like this. On a 3rd and 18, senior running back Adam Shaugabay of Warroad takes it 58 yards to the house.
The head coach says there's plenty to learn from this scrimmage.
Bubba Schweigert/UND Head Coach: “We needed to do it and we have something to really evaluate now. Defensively, I just think we're running better to the ball than we did early in the spring. It's becoming habit now, which it needs to be. Our communication is better than it was two or three days ago. So, those are some improvements that we're happy about.”
Joe Mollberg/UND Soph. QB - Detroit Lakes: “After a week or so of camp, it's always good to get out there and get some live reps to see what everyone has got. This is when you start seeing who the tough guys are on the team. We have a lot of things to clean up, but I'm excited to move forward from here and see where the next step takes us.”
