Grand Forks, ND (WDAY TV) - When Bubba Schweigert was hired 8 months ago to be the Head Coach of UND football today was the day he was dreaming of.

North Dakota opened fall camp this morning with practice number one, under their new coaching staff.

Today's first practice was just helmets and shorts for the players, but there was a noticeable new buzz in the air.

Schweigert is taking over a team that won just three games a year ago, but he says they are focusing on the now.

Bubba Schweigert/First Year as Head Coach: “This is a big day for our team, like we told the guys right at the beginning this day is the most important day, how we start and what kind of enthusiasm and what kind of energy we have out here on day one is pretty important and we get through this day and day two is the most important day, so we are really trying to not give this day by day lip service we want it to be real.”

Dayo Idowu/UND Jr. Linebacker: “That first practice was a lot of extra enthusiasm every body's just eager to get back on the field.  There is definitely some wrinkles we have to iron out but I think really our focus is put that first practice behind us and make sure we keep the same enthusiasm and energy for ever practice that we have and I think we will be just fine.”

UND opens their schedule at San Jose State on August 28th.
