Two suspects identified in American Crystal copper thefts
Moorhead, MN - Clay County Sheriff’s officials said Wednesday they’ve identified two people suspected in a string of apparent copper thefts from American Crystal Sugar Co. beet pilers.
Clay County Sheriff’s Lt. Stephen Landsem said several tips from the public following a $2,500 reward offered by American Crystal were what led to the name of one of the suspects.
Landsem said investigators identified both people they believe were involved and have recommended the case to the County Attorney’s office for consideration of formal charges.
Landsem said the sheriff’s office will release the names of the two suspects once formal charges are filed.
The recent thefts at beet pilers in Clay County and other area counties have targeted large power cords, possibly to sell the copper inside the cords, Clay County deputies have said.
