Transplant Games of America taking place in Houston, Texas this week
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - This week, transplant recipients, donor families and supporters are traveling to Houston, Texas for the Transplant Games of America.
The multi-sport festival is for people who've received life-saving transplant surgeries.
Tammy Winter is competing with the MN-DAK team.
She received a kidney transplant 17 years ago after waiting for surgery for 2.5 years.
Winter also competed at the games in 2004 for bowling and golf, and she hopes her participation helps promote live-saving organ and tissue donation.
“Hundreds of thousands of people are waiting for various organs and various needs, and someone's dying on that list every day,” says Transplant Games Athlete Tammy Winter.
More than 60% of Minnesotans and North Dakotans are registered organ donors.
The Transplant Games kickoff Friday, and continue through Tuesday.
