There may be a way to bring back the passenger pigeon
Fargo ND 301 8th St. S. 58103

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - It was 100 years ago, the passenger pigeon became extinct.

This morning the Red River Zoo teamed with Dr. Stanley Temple from the University of Wisconsin to learn about conservation and extinction.

The passenger pigeon was once the most abundant species in North America, and has been Temple's primary research subject over the past 40 years.

He says the species is gone because we ate them all, but also tells us that there might be a way to bring the birds back.

Dr. Stanley Temple/ Conservationist- Univ. of Wisconsin: "Cloning... A very carefully preserved cell, from an Eyebeck species in Spain, that went extinct. And they're hoping that using cloning techniques, they might actually be able to recreate one."

If you'd like to hear more from Dr. Temple, he's holding a free lecture Friday night at 6:30 at NDSU's Reineke Fine Arts Center.
