Team USA advancing to round of 16 in World Cup
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The US soccer team arrived in Brazil three weeks ago knowing that the deck was stacked against them in a group with two of the World's powers that advancing to the elimination round would be difficult.
But after a win and a tie in their first two games they controlled their own destiny heading into the final game of the group stage, facing second ranked Germany, the team US coach Jurgen Klinsmann starred for.
The match was played in the rain; it was scoreless into the 2nd half when the Germans strike, Tim Howard makes a great first save, but the rebound is drilled home by Thomas Muller, 1-0 Germany.
At the same time, Ghana and Portugal were playing, the US needed some help since they were trailing, Christiano Ronaldo provided that scoring down low.
Portugal went on and defeated Ghana 2-1, meaning the US had qualified for the round of 16.
But they had a chance late in the match, Michael Bradley with the cross; it's nearly headed in by Clint Dempsey! Germany wins 1-0, but for the 1st time, the Americans have advanced to the round of 16 in two straight World Cups.
Jurgen Klinsmann/USA Head Coach: “It's huge; it's huge for us getting out of this group. Everybody said you have no chance, we took that chance and we move on and now we really want to prove a point.”
Tim Howard/USA Goalkeeper: “Proud of the group, I think we still got a lot left in us. I thought we played well throughout the group, today was a tough game in tough conditions, hats off to Germany I think they have an opportunity to win the World Cup that's how good I think they are. We had a chance there at the end, we had a chance but we go again on Tuesday. To get to the round of 16 it shows how far we come.”
