Thomas Carey of Moorhead and Brandon Smith of California.. Allegedly video-taped sex with a 15-year-old girl, then sent the video to others.

But many social media users are placing the blame on their victim.

And a warning, some of the language in this story is graphic.

Abbie Clapp/Moorhead High Junior: "She's such a whore."

Camryn Hodny/Moorhead High Sophomore: "She's a slut for dressing like that."

Clapp: "Skanky, loose."

These are comments...

Delana Haglund/Moorhead High Junior: "It's ridiculous."

Circulating through high schools all over town.

But one term..

Haglund: "The word slut."

Is tossed around more than most.

Clapp: "She's such a slut. Look at that skirt."

Haglund: "A lot of people don't know how big of a problem it actually is."

It's creating a culture called "slut shaming" meant to degrade women based on what they wear, how they act, and especially- when they cross the line.

Dr. Christopher Johnson/Rape and Abuse Crisis Center Exec. Dir: "The word itself is intended to be derogatory."

The latest example comes after these two hockey players... Allegedly video-taped sex with a 15-year-old girl.

Hodny: "A lot of people assume and then start the labeling of slut or whore."

As soon as we put the story up on our WDAY Facebook page, comments poured in. We're up to almost 200 posts from other people, many of them pointing the finger at the victim, not the players.

Johnson: "I just think it's human nature to assign blame. At times, we falsely attribute blame to someone who has been victimized by a crime. "

Clapp: "It makes me really mad actually. Victim blaming is a whole part of rape culture."

Comments accusing the victim of lying, saying she wanted it as much as they did.....one even labeling her a "puck slut"

Clapp: "If a guy has sex with some girls, he's a stud, he's manly, he's powerful."

Haglund: "While women are seen as dirty or impure."

And experts say no reason is ever reason to blame a victim.

Johnson: "Whether or not they were intoxicated or what they wore, or how late they were out, all these things have very little to do with being victimized."

So comments, labels, and words like this...

Hodny: "It's a very derogatory term so it does do harm."

Only make slut shaming worse.

These Moorhead students participated in workshop and campaign to stop the word "slut" last month at the high school.
