Guests painted pinatas and then got to see the animals play with their creations.

The captive creatures -- like the zoo's famous Red Pandas -- need frequent enrichment to stay happy.

It simulates activities animals would normally do in the wild -- like exploring and making choices.

Zoo staff says enrichment is something they practice on a regular basis.

Sally Jacobson/ Red River Zoo: There's a lot of things we do to stimulate natural behavior with the animals and to help ease stress with training... and also just to keep those animals psychologically and physically healthy.

Staff members say they're always happy to answer questions about your favorite animals.

You can visit the Red River Zoo any day in the summer between 10 AM and 7 PM.
