Police: Meth motivated Utah mother to kill 6 infants
Pleasant Grove, UT (CNN) - DNA test results of seven infants found dead in a Pleasant Grove home have been completed. Investigators say the results show five females and two males were born to 39-year old Megan Huntsman.
Prosecutors say one baby was stillborn, the others murdered. Pleasant Grove Police have also released a motive behind the infants' deaths.
Captain Michael Roberts - Pleasant Grove Police Department: "The motive basically in this case involves drugs and alcohol. Megan had stated during her interview that during that time frame she was heavily into methamphetamine, and after that period, also, there was a period of alcohol abuse and it was pretty prevalent."
Pleasant Grove Police recall how strange Megan Huntsman's confession was, regarding the murder of her six new born babies. They say the cause of death was asphyxiation.
Captain Michael Roberts: "She did in her statement state she needed money to buy drugs. Obviously it's not cheap, and we got the impression that the babies were just kind of an inconvenience; that she couldn't afford drugs and the babies at that point."
According to DNA evidence, all seven babies belonged to Huntsman and her estranged husband, Darren West.
Captain Michael Roberts: "We had hoped that that's the way it was gonna be all along, and we believed that and it just confirmed it for us."
According to police, the babies all died between 1996 and 2006. Darren West discovered the first baby while cleaning out the garage this past April. He had just returned from a nine year prison sentence. It was during the police investigation that the remains of six more babies were found in the garage.
Reporter: "Darren West lived with her during all these pregnancies..."
Captain Michael Roberts: "Correct."
Reporter: "How could he not know that she was pregnant?"
Captain Michael Roberts: "That's his statement. His statement is that he didn't know she was pregnant. There's been statements from other family members and neighbors, as well. It's not just Darren. There's a lot of people that had no idea she had been pregnant."
DNA evidence shows that all seven babies were full term births; five girls and two boys. Huntsman has been charged with six counts of first degree murder. Police believe one of the babies was stillborn. Police say Huntsman has been very forthcoming with information.
Reporter: "Did she currently seem to be on drugs?"
Captain Michael Roberts: "No, no. She seemed to be pretty level-headed."
Megan Huntsman is facing six counts of murder, and is due back in court on July 21.
