North Dakota number one for consuming most beer per person of any state
Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - For the second year in a row, North Dakota ranks number 1 for consuming the most beer per person, of any state.
This according to a study done by Beer Marketer's Insights.
That study says on average in 2013, North Dakota residents of drinking age, drank more than 40 gallons of beer per year. That's nearly 500, 12 ounce cans or bottles of beer, or almost 3 kegs worth.
When asking people why they think North Dakota leads, there seems to be a common response
"We have a long, cold winter,”says Jared Winmill.
"When it comes to the winters you just hunker down,” says Troy Gion.
"I hate to bring up the winters because right now it's summer and we don't even want to think about the winter but,” says General Manager of Wurst Bier hall Andrea Williams.
North Dakota's winters are known to be tough, but Wurst Beir Hall's General Manager also has another theory linking North Dakota's beer intake, culture.
"At the end of the week when you see our empty kegs stacked up to the ceiling. You definitely get an idea that the appetite is very large and unstoppable,” says Williams.
It's that culture that some local health professionals find unnerving, Fargo-Moorhead had the third highest rate of binge drinking in 2011 according to the CDC.
"What the stats say is that there is a definite alcohol problem here and that there is a culture of drinking that is continuing to live on,” says Robyn Litke-Sall who works at Fargo Cass Public Health.
Other theories behind the numbers range from a strong economy, to a growing population:
"We are a smaller state. There's a lot of newer people in this area. With the oil boom especially,” says Fargo Beer Drinker Troy Gion.
Regardless of the reason, those at Wurst Bier Hall today greeted the news with pride.
"A pride of actually enjoying some American product like new Belgium or any of those other breweries. Its people's hard work,” says Gion.
"I have no doubt that we will win again next year if you want to think of it that way,” says Williams.
Not far behind North Dakota is another state that starts with an N - New Hampshire, averaging just over 42 gallons of beer per person.
Minnesota didn't even crack the top 10, averaging 28.7 gallons per legal aged adult.
