NFL Preseason: Minnesota 10 Oakland 6
Minneapolis, MN (WDAY TV) - The Mike Zimmer era opened tonight, as the Vikings played their first preseason game against the Oakland Raiders.
The differences don't end with Zimmer, the Vikings will have to get used to the Gophers TCF bank stadium as their temporary home.
The new coach had to like what he saw on the Vikings opening drive; Matt Cassel went 5 for 6 for 62 yards, including this 22 yard hook up to tight end Kyle Rudolph, who steps out at the one.
Matt Asiata scores on the next play, new offensive coordinator Norv Turner enjoying that.
Rookie Teddy Bridgewater took over on the 2nd series, his first completion is this over the middle pass to Cordarrelle Patterson who picks up 13 yards. Bridgewater finished 6 of 13 for 49 yards.
Anthony Barr was chosen 9th overall by the Vikings, and they hope he can do a lot of this in the regular season. Barr with the sack on Matt Schaub.
But, it was a young man from Detroit Lakes that stole the show, Adam Thielen made an impact nearly every time he touched the ball, he returned punts early, taking 2 of them 20 plus yards.
Just before halftime, he makes a huge tackle on the punt team.
Then he hauls in a pass from Christian Ponder for a 15-yard gain. Thielen, trying to make the jump from practice squad to 53-man roster. Tonight, was a big step.
The Vikings go onto win it, 10-6.
