Moorhead, MN (WDAY TV) - It's being called a game changer for MSU Moorhead athletics: Scheels is donating $1 million to the athletic department to go towards fieldturf to cover Nemzek Field, which will start in the spring of 2015 and be ready for next football season.

It's a project that athletic director Doug Peters has been working on for years. Most of the schools in the Northern Sun have field turf so for head coach Steve Laqua this is about evening things up.

"Having a place we can consistently call home for spring practice creates consistency, gets routine, we're creatures of habit, routine determines success and so we can get into good routine better chance of being successful...to catch up in the arms race is needed, if we want to be a premier athletic department in the nation we need to be that in how we operate in facilities and scholarships and I think President Blackhurst has that vision been fun and exciting to see energy in the two months she's been in charge."

Peters said the lights at Nemzek will be renovated and with that, there's hopes that MSU Moorhead will host a season opener under the lights next September.
