New Mexico car thief's "Best Day" goes south in a hurry

A man who stole a police bait car in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was all smiles, dancing to the song "Best Day of My Life" as he drove away. The tables quickly turned when police disabled the car and arrested him for theft. 2 / 2

Albuquerque, NM (CNN) - It's a song you might recognize – and for a suspected thief who thinks he boosted a car with no one in sight, it's the perfect soundtrack.

Lieutenant Paul Szych - Albuquerque Police Department: "Not only did they seem overwhelmed with joy that they have the car, ironically enough the song playing on the radio is ‘This is the Best Day of My Life’ as he's taking the vehicle."

Last Friday, police planted a bait car in southeast Albuquerque and it didn't take long to reel in this man.

He's all smiles as the song, "The Best Day of My Life" blares from the radio. But he doesn't get far before police shut off his car remotely and make an arrest. 21-year old Drew Mayo was taken into custody.  Some would argue it was far from the best day of his life.

Lieutenant Paul Szych: "Absolutely not. It seems like this individual made a bad choice, and did something I'm sure they now regret."

Mayo was charged with unlawful taking of a motor vehicle and aside from the video's comedic nature, Albuquerque Police say they hope a valuable lesson was learned.

Lieutenant Paul Szych: "If we can take programs such as this to deter individuals from stealing vehicles, that's something that's mission critical for us because the deterrent is just as important as the apprehension."
