New Fargo floodplain map takes effect January 16th, 2015

The City of Fargo held a press conference Tuesday morning to announce the changes to the floodplain map after receiving the Final Letter of Determination from FEMA. The new map expands the current 100 year floodplain in Fargo, which will result in approximately 2,300 structures being affected.

Fargo, ND (WDAY TV) - The latest floodplain map released by FEMA will take effect January 16th of 2015, and will impact over 2,000 buildings in Fargo.

The City of Fargo held a press conference Tuesday morning to announce the changes to the floodplain map after receiving the Final Letter of Determination from FEMA. The new map expands the current 100 year floodplain in Fargo, which will result in approximately 2,300 structures being affected.

"It's essential that Fargo residents become educated about the floodplain and flood insurance," said Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker.

The new floodplain map is available at www.fargofloodinsurance.com. The site also includes information detaling floodplain risk policy.

Walaker also emphasized the waiting period involved when purchasing flood insurance, and encouraged residents affected to not wait for the last minute.

"You can't wait until January 16th if you want to be on the preferred list," Walaker said. "You need to do this at least 30 days before that date, hopefully sometime this fall."
