As of now, the city has no restrictions on where sex offenders can live, but that could change.

People living in neighborhoods like this one - near two local colleges - are concerned about sex offenders living nearby.

The issue came to light after outcry from Moorhead residents living near high-risk sex offenders.

One level three offender lives across the street from a daycare.

Monday night, the council discussed for the first time whether to place restrictions on where certain offenders can live.

They've decided to research similar laws in other communities, and talk to law enforcement about how it would affect their ability to track these offenders.

Brenda Elmer/Moorhead City Council: “I'm not comfortable with the status quo of what we have right now, especially when we talk about vulnerable populations. The most recent one, I think, is one; high-risk, level three, children between the ages 7 and 10.”

One example of these laws is a rough draft of the law would prevent certain offenders from living within two-thousand feet of a school, daycare, park, or playground.

It would also require a one-thousand foot buffer around public school bus stops, places of worship that hold classes and other spots where children regularly gather.
