The Moorhead City Council brought up the idea of canceling their sponsorship of the diversion Monday night.

This all came up when the council was asked to authorize soil testing and other evaluations for the southern alignment of the diversion.

They denied, but as a project sponsor that's something that would fall under their responsibilities.

So, they've decided to look at whether they want to continue being a sponsor of the diversion.

They did not take any action to cancel their sponsorship tonight, but did raise some questions about their role in the project.

Heidi Durand/City Council Ward 2: “Whether or not we want to continue as a sponsor; I think heck yeah, we do. We have a very important piece in this.”

Del Rae Williams/Moorhead Mayor: “More than likely, it can go forward, and will go forward. Especially if Minnesota DNR does it, but if we pull out, we don't become that voice to ask the questions.”

The Corps of Engineers prefers there be a local sponsor from each state.

A representative from the Corps will be here next week.
