Michael Kyle Burris accepts plea deal
Fergus Falls, MN (WDAY TV) - New developments today, in an Otter Tail County murder, involving the Burris family.
The man accused of helping in his cousin's murder, pleads guilty.
24-year-old Michael Kyle Burris and his father- 65-year-old Michael Allen Burris are both charged in the case.
In court today, Michael Kyle Burris pleaded guilty to aiding an offender-accomplice after the fact of murder.
He says he helped his father dispose of his cousin, Scott Burris's body, after his father murdered him back in May of 2012.
Prosecutors say it all stemmed from a $20,000 drug debt.
Usually Michael Kyle Burris's felony charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years- but as part of a plea deal. Both sides agreed to a maximum recommendation just over six years.
Michelle Eldien/Asst. Otter Tail Co. Attorney: “The only people there are the people who can tell us what happened and sometimes we know a lot and sometimes we know very little. Especially with a deceased person, you don't get the story from them. So we have to rely on the facts and the corroborating evidence that what he suggests that what he is saying is truthful, which we do believe is.”
Michael Kyle Burris's sentencing is set for October 3rd, the same month his father should go to trial.
